Swiss police make arrests over ‘suicide pod’

Swiss police arrested several people after a 64-year-old American woman became the first person to use a so-called ‘suicide pod’ to end her life. The Last Resort, which operates the 3D-printed Sarco capsule and relies on memberships and donations for funding, said it was acting on legal advice. But the day the woman died, the Swiss health minister said that Sarco didn’t meet product safety or chemical laws. Those arrested include Dr Florian Willet, co-president of The Last Resort, who said he was the only person present for the death of the woman in a forest. Swiss law allows assisted suicide as long as the person takes his or her life with no “external assistance” and those who help must not do so with “any self-serving motive”. Other countries, including the UK, are considering legalising assisted dying.
