Donald Trump was "between three and five hundred yards" away on a golf course in Palm Beach when a would-be assassin with an assault weapon was spotted, shot at and scared off by Secret Service sharpshooters yesterday. "But with a rifle and a scope like that," the local sheriff said, "that's not a long distance". The potential shooter was widely named as Ryan Routh, a former Trump supporter who has travelled to Europe in support of Ukraine. He was apprehended soon afterwards as Trump posted online that he was safe and well. The FBI stated within an hour that this had been an assassination attempt, and to survive two in two months will only burnish Trump's image among his base as indestructible. That may help with fundraising; whether it delivers a lasting boost in polls is less clear. It will further constrain his options when campaigning (he’s already forced to speak from behind bullet-proof glass). If there are echoes in that of Biden forced by Covid to campaign largely from his Delaware basement, it's worth remembering that did him no harm.
