Exactly 471 days ago, 24-year-old Ali Truwit was attacked by a shark while snorkelling off the Turks and Caicos islands. The injuries she suffered from the shark bite led to the amputation of her leg below the knee. A little over a year later she is representing Team USA in the S10 100 metre and 400 metre freestyle and 100 metre backstroke. Only three months after her surgery she had to compete to make the standard to be in contention for a Paralympic spot. After being asked if she should instead focus on preparing for her home Paralympics in Los Angeles in 2028, Truwit responded: “I’m not someone who waits.”
