For more than 12 years Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s (also known as simply KJT) social media bio has read: “Chronically indecisive so I’ve adopted two surnames & the heptathlon”. Her star has risen markedly since she burst onto the scene at the 2012 London Olympics, playing second fiddle to the great Jess Ennis and finishing a respectable 13th. She has won gold twice at both the world championships and Commonwealth Games, but an Olympic medal has eluded her. At Rio 2016, she finished sixth overall but her 1.98m high jump would have won her gold in the standalone competition. In 2020 at the Tokyo games, she suffered a calf injury that ruled her out after just three events. A 300m square mural was unveiled of KJT in her home city of Liverpool ahead of the Olympics, and her best friend is superstar actress and classmate Jodie Comer. The seven-discipline heptathlon takes place over two days, and after the first day KJT was in first place.
