Plenty of attention is paid to opening ceremonies, but what about the sad au revoir? The Paris closing ceremony promises spectators a journey through time (as per usual), including a sequence set in a post-dystopian wasteland (now we’re talking). Oh and Tom Cruise will rappel 42 metres from the roof of the Stade de France. From there, the broadcast will cut to Cruise riding through Paris on a motorbike with the Olympic flag, before flying to the US and skydiving down to the Hollywood sign in Los Angeles – inspired, you’d have to imagine, by Britain’s l`ate Queen. Cruise will then pass the flag to a smorgasbord of athletes as they carry it around the 2028 host city while somehow avoiding the freeways. That sounds sufficiently perilous, but the footage is pre-recorded so there will be less jeopardy than a dip in the Seine. Hélas!
