NHS “shake and soup” diet helps cut type 2 diabetes

A strict 900-calorie a day diet offered by the NHS could help reverse type 2 diabetes, according to new research. Participants in the programme consumed shakes, soups and meal-replacement bars for 12 weeks, before getting support to introduce healthy meal choices back into their diet. The research found that of 1,740 people who began the programme before January 2022, 45 per cent dropped out within a year. But the 945 people who completed the programme saw an average weight loss of 10kg; of those who had HbA1c measurements recorded (an indicator of blood sugar levels) 32 per cent put their type 2 diabetes into remission. The plan costs about £1,100 per patient, which means it is cheaper for the NHS than weight-loss drugs like Wegovy, which costs up to £175 a month (depending on the dose) for up to two years.
