The US sprinter was set for greatness at Tokyo 2020 until her dream was cut short. Weeks before the games Sha’Carri Richardson tested positive for cannabis, which is not performance enhancing but still banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency. (Robin Williams once joked that the only way cannabis improves performance is “if there's a big f****** Hershey bar at the end of the run”.) Richardson smoked marijuana after learning from a reporter about the death of her biological mother. The track star, who was abandoned by her mother and contemplated taking her own life in high school, said she was “blinded by hurt” when she received the news. Known for her long colourful fingernails as well as her astonishing pace, Richardson is favourite for the 100m but must overcome a stacked field. Winning the US championships last year, she declared: “I’m not back, I’m better.” Those five words will soon meet their ultimate test.
