Far-right protesters broke into two army bases in Israel on Monday, after nine soldiers were detained as part of a military investigation into the alleged abuse of a Palestinian prisoner at the Sde Teiman compound. The head of Israel’s military condemned “unlawful behaviours bordering on anarchy, harming the [Israeli military], the security of the state and the war effort”. Far-right members of parliament joined protesters at the Sde Teiman base, described by rights groups as “the Israeli Guantanamo” (and which Israel has started to close after international pressure) before the crowds moved to the army headquarters where the soldiers were taken for questioning. Netanyahu issued a short statement calling for calm. But the chaos demonstrates that he has “lost control of Israel’s extreme right”, the Haaretz newspaper said.
