Mohammed Deif, Hamas’s military chief, is Israel’s most wanted person, “like Osama bin Laden for the Americans”. He has survived at least seven Israeli assassination attempts. On Saturday, Israel tried again, striking a compound near the city of Khan Younis in a designated humanitarian zone in Gaza. The Gaza health ministry said the airstrike killed at least 91 Palestinians and left 300 injured; Reuters reported that the nearby Nasser Hospital was overwhelmed and “no longer able to function”. The Israeli military confirmed yesterday that the strike killed Rafa Salama, commander of Hamas’s Khan Younis brigade – but Deif’s fate remains unknown. Hamas, which denied he had been killed, said yesterday it had not withdrawn from talks over a ceasefire in Gaza.
