There are two ways to watch Despicable Me 4. First, as an unassuming but astoundingly long-lived cartoon franchise about likeable superbaddie Gru, who balances domestic irritations with foiling world dominating schemes. Second, as the film that saved Hollywood. Both are true. So far, DM4 has earned over $230 million worldwide. Its US opening weekend took $75 million. Ghostbusters only took $45 million and Bad Boys was cheered for pulling in $56 million. The plot is… well, if you’ve seen the previous films, it’s not like it’s gone all Sam Peckinpah. Steve Carrell’s Gru is in witness protection raising his son, and is hunted down by Will Ferrell’s French villain Maxime Le Mal. Minions are involved. Hilarity ensues. The metaplot? This is what people will leave their homes to see in 2024.
