Former nurse Lucy Letby has been found guilty of attempting to murder a premature baby girl. In August 2023, the 34 year-old was convicted of murdering seven premature babies and attempting to murder six others at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016. Letby faced retrial on a charge of attempting to murder 25 week-old “Baby K” after the jury in the original trial failed to reach a verdict. It took the jury at Manchester Crown Court three and a half hours to reach a decision based on evidence from the 10-day trial. The prosecution argued that Letby dislodged Baby K’s breathing tube just hours after her birth, an action that could have been fatal. Letby consistently maintained her innocence, denying she did any harm toward Baby K and all other offences for which she was previously convicted. Baby K died a few days after her birth at a specialist hospital due to complications related to being premature. Letby, already sentenced to 14 whole life orders last summer, which makes her the most prolific child killer in modern UK history, will be sentenced on Friday.
