Tom Bower has had a long and estimable career as an investigative journalist, with detailed books exposing Nazi war criminals, the dodgy dealings of Robert Maxwell, Mohamed Al-Fayed and Conrad Black and corruption in football. His hatchet job on the Beckhams seems out of character – it could almost be described as bitter. Bower criticises Victoria’s looks, suggests infidelity without proof, recycles old stories and lists scandals in detail before concluding they aren’t true. He delights in overplaying small matters – David Beckham drank a Coke when he was sponsored by Pepsi and claimed to have eaten fish fingers as a child without proof – but shrugs past much of the controversy over Beckham acting as ambassador for Qatar’s World Cup Bid. It’s a solid cuts job from an irritated author but a curious piece of work from Bower.
