Australia’s ruling Labor party wanted to introduce a ban on vaping without a prescription, which would have been the first of its kind in the world. Instead, facing opposition from other political parties, it compromised. From next week vapes will only be available on prescription from pharmacies – but new rules agreed this week mean only under-18s will still need a prescription from October, while adults will need to have a conversation with the pharmacist. The change is a “bad decision”, according to the Pharmacy Guild, which said its “gobsmacked” members had not been properly consulted. But doctors said it was a “pragmatic” way to keep vapes away from children and help adults quit smoking.
