Akiko Hart: I hope we recognise human rights and scrap voter ID

I hope our rights will be respected and strengthened. Successive governments have weakened them in recent years, and history shows when that happens it can be difficult to get them back. Key to this will be protecting everyone’s ability to challenge those in power when they treat us badly. So we must celebrate the European Convention on Human Rights, which puts all the rights and freedoms we’re familiar with into law – including our privacy, free expression and protest rights. The UK has a rich history of protests driving positive change, and everyone must be able to speak out on important issues. We must also scrap Voter ID, which stops countless people – particularly those who are already marginalised – from taking part in elections. I hope for a government that recognises human rights for what they are: tools that allow us all to live with dignity and respect.
