The UN Security Council has demanded that paramilitaries call off an eight-week siege of Al Fashir, the Sudanese city where fighting has sparked fears of an imminent large-scale massacre. Al Fashir is the last major city in Sudan’s Darfur region still controlled by the Sudanese army. Sealed off by the UAE-backed Rapid Support Forces, it currently shelters 1.5 million people – and its last functioning hospital has been forced to close down. A security council resolution – drafted by the UK and passed with Russia’s abstention – calls for an end to hostilities, access for aid and civilians to be able to leave the city. It also takes aim at the UAE for supporting the paramilitaries and Iran for backing the army, with evidence of drones being supplied from both countries.
