Wednesday 19 October proved to be the 24 hours that ended Liz Truss’s short premiership. It will go down as one of the most chaotic days in Conservative party history. But it matters more than another prime minister taking the reins in yet another turbulent year of British politics. It matters because for many in the country, that day will indelibly have changed how they think of politics and the kind of country we have become. It was a dawning realisation that, as millions face financial hardship and the choice of heating or eating, MPs once again put party before country to show just how disconnected politics was from the real world.
