Snow White buckles under the weight of political attacks – and being a bad movie

Snow White suffered a sharp 66 per cent fall at the US box office in its second weekend, taking $14.2 million and being replaced at number one by Jason Statham’s new action film A Working Man.

Part of the story is that the Disney remake is a political hot mess. Snow White star Rachel Zegler has been attacked over her Latina background, anti-Trump posts, and support of Palestine.

Meanwhile Zegler’s advocacy has reportedly alienated Israeli co-star Gal Gadot, who has received death threats.

Cleaving an audience in two sometimes means no one turns up, especially when the film is review bombed.

The second part of Snow White’s struggle is about Disney.

Its live-action remakes are mostly duffs, with Cinderella and The Jungle Book being two worthy exceptions.

Jason Statham is worth a mention. He’s Britain’s highest earning non-franchise actor, with a worldwide box office return of nearly $2 billion.
