Sam Bankman-Fried touts his GOP bona fides in ploy for Trump pardon

When Sam Bankman-Fried realised he was under federal investigation, he brainstormed ways to protect himself.

Third on his list: “Go on Tucker [Carlson], come out as a republican.”

From a Brooklyn prison where he’s serving a 25-year sentence for fraud and conspiracy, the disgraced crypto chief and former Democratic donor is making good on that plan.

In an interview with the former Fox News host on Friday, Bankman-Fried insisted he was not a criminal and said that by late 2022 he was secretly donating as much to Republicans as Democrats.

This is part of Bankman-Fried’s longshot bid for a pardon from Trump, who has previously granted clemency based on personal connections and political calculations.

Bankman-Fried’s parents, both Stanford law professors, have reportedly met with sources close to Trump to support their son’s case.

Worth noting: the FTX founder’s lengthy sentence is partly down to his lack of remorse.
