Labour appears to be making tentative moves towards a long-awaited reset with the European Union.
Ahead of a London-based summit with key figures from the bloc in May, the government is reportedly considering a restricted youth mobility scheme with the EU. It’s baby steps.
According to the Times, the reciprocal scheme would likely be capped at around 70,000 students and workers aged 18-30. It would require participants to pay an NHS surcharge and ban them from accessing benefits.
The EU is already said to be unhappy with some of these conditions, but given Starmer’s reluctance to engage in anything that could be (mis)construed as overturning Brexit, it may have to accept that domestic pressures will continue to dictate the UK’s stance for now.
