Last year around 25 of the major studio releases were sequels, while this year at least 35 have already been confirmed. You might imagine there would be a growing boredom with follow-ups, but two franchise favourites look like they will be bankers.
That’s despite the fourth Bridget Jones film finding its jokes muted by the passing of husband and dashing human rights lawyer Mark Darcy, and the fourth Captain America movie being starved of innovation with its plot in the style of The Manchurian Candidate and its decision to cast Harrison Ford as US president (a role he played in Air Force One).
You can see what both films want to be. Bridget Jones is trying to grow up and Captain America is trying to bring Marvel back down from Ragnarok and universal destruction.
But four is not the lucky number. Who knew we’d miss Barbie and Oppenheimer so much?
