Surge in Americans seeking Irish passports after Trump re-elected

A growing number of Americans are looking to get second passports after Trump’s re-election, according to a London-based migration consultancy.

Henley & Partners reports an almost 400 per cent rise in enquiries during election week, with “constant” phone calls the day after Trump won. A popular choice is Ireland.

An Irish passport gives access to an English-speaking country and allows for freedom of movement across the EU and the UK.

Ireland offers citizenship to those born to Irish parents or grandparents – good news for the 9 per cent of Americans who claim Irish heritage.

For many, the first step towards Irish citizenship is getting on the Foreign Birth Register, a database of descendants born to Irish people abroad.

The number of such registrations in the US increased by half in 2024 compared to 2023, while the number of Irish passport applications by Americans rose by 10 per cent.
