Less than 24 hours after he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with tech chieftains at Trump’s inauguration, Elon Musk was casting doubt on his peers’ AI ambitions.
On Tuesday the president announced a $100 billion joint venture between OpenAI, Softbank and Oracle to fund the rollout of AI infrastructure and data centres.
Musk swiftly took to X to question whether it had the cash to get going. In subsequent posts he derided the joint venture – called Stargate – as “fake” and called the CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman a “swindler”.
The episode seems to confirm Musk’s unwillingness to curb his unfiltered online commentary despite his new role as a key adviser to Trump.
Last year he had a similar, awkward run-in with hardline Maga supporters over his backing of H-1B visas.
