AI tweaks raise questions about Oscar-tipped performances

Oscar contenders The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez have faced a backlash over voice cloning after revelations that lead actors in both films had their performances improved by AI.

The Brutalist’s editor, Dávid Jancsó, told the online magazine RedShark News that he combined his own Hungarian accent with Adrien Brody’s using an AI tool to make Brody’s dialogue credible by refining “certain vowels and letters”.

Brody won best actor at the Golden Globes for his performance, usually a bellwether for the Academy Awards.

In Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofía Gascón’s singing was blended with Camille, the French pop star who co-wrote the score, to extend Gascón’s vocal range.

Heretic, starring Hugh Grant, includes an end credit saying no generative AI was used in the film.

Academy members favour actors who go to extremes for their roles. How they view performance-enhancing AI remains to be seen.
