Meme coins launched by Donald and Melania Trump reached a combined value of more than $11.3 billion before the inauguration.
Since Friday, 200 million digital tokens celebrating the new president’s response to his July assassination attempt have been released. If the remaining 800 million still held by CIC Digital, a Trump Organization affiliate, were bought at yesterday’s price, it would make Trump one of the world’s richest men on paper.
But banking that wealth is tricky. Meme coins can be purchased and sold for cash or other crypto, but their prices are volatile and they occupy a regulatory grey area.
It’s notable that Trump’s website says the $TRUMP coin is “not intended to be... an investment opportunity”. The site doesn’t even call it a “coin”.
Regardless, the Trump family can make money from transaction fees. Barron and Eric have registered websites ending in .eth, the domain extension used for the Ethereum cryptocurrency.
