Days after Mark Zuckerberg urged Trump to defend tech companies against EU fines, Brussels has launched a review of its investigations into Apple, Meta, X and Google.
The reassessment will cover all cases launched since March last year, including one into Google that was expected to conclude in 2024. “It’s going to be a whole new ballgame with these tech oligarchs so close to Trump and using that to pressurise us,” a senior EU diplomat told the FT.
Under the Digital Markets Act, the EU has spearheaded work to curb the market abuse of large tech platforms including Elon Musk’s X, which was first investigated under the DMA for illegal content in 2023.
More recently, regulators were compelled to watch a livestream conversation between Musk and Alice Weidel, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, to check for misinformation.
