Meta has updated its “hateful conduct” policy, permitting users of its platforms to call LGBTQ+ people mentally ill. Meta’s new rules allow “allegations of mental illness or abnormality when based on gender or sexual orientation”, where it is prohibited elsewhere.
The reason Meta gave for this change was “political and religious discourse about transgenderism and homosexuality”.
Meta also removed lines banning users from referring to transgender or non-binary people as “it” and to women as “household objects or property”.
The policy will take effect across Meta platforms including Facebook, Threads and Instagram, which this week was found to have been hiding content with LGBTQ-related hashtags under a policy restricting “sexually suggestive content” from users whose sensitive content filter was switched on.
Meta said the terms were mistakenly restricted.
