Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Softbank, appeared with Donald Trump at a press conference on Monday pledging to invest $100 billion into the US over four years and create 100,000 jobs.
The announcement was light on detail, but fits a pattern of tech CEOs lavishing praise and gifts on the president-elect in public displays of allegiance – and in deference to his transactional style.
In the last month Trump has dined with Apple’s Tim Cook, hosted TikTok boss Shou Zi Chew and met with Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman and Mark Zuckerberg at Mar-a-Lago.
Pledged contributions to the Trump-Vance inaugural fund, including $1 million each from the latter three tech bosses, hit a record $150 million as of Monday.
