US Supreme Court to hear last-ditch TikTok bid to avoid ban

The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear TikTok’s challenge to a law that could ban the app in the United States.

The law requires TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance to sell the social media platform to an American company by 19 January or face a ban from US app stores.

The bill that introduced the law said it was intended to “protect the national security of the United States”. ByteDance and TikTok have denied any link to the Chinese state.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on 10 January, before deciding whether the law violates TikTok’s free speech rights under the First Amendment.

President-elect Donald Trump takes office the day after the January deadline and opposes a ban. On Monday, he met the CEO of TikTok at Mar-a-Lago.
