America’s tallest building won’t be where you’re thinking. Currently, the ten tallest US skyscrapers are all either in New York City (8) or Chicago (2), but developers in Oklahoma City are aiming for the top spot with Legends Tower.
Current plans put the 134-storey building at 581 metres – taller than current US record-holder, One World Trade Center, and more than twice the height of anything else in Oklahoma.
Plans were approved by the city government this year and the developer, Matteson Capital, says it’s secured $1.5 billion in funding.
The last big blocker lies with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Local airport bosses told the FAA the tower would have an impact on flight paths and an FAA report on the development is due at the end of this month.
Matteson Capital’s founder says the tower could be a “little shorter” if needed to get the plans over the line. If he wants the record, he’ll have just 40m to play with.
