New York authorities were still hunting on Thursday for the gunman who fatally shot Brian Thompson, the chief executive of health insurer UnitedHealthcare.
A motive for the killing was also unclear – the police said they were investigating words found on bullet casings at the scene outside a Manhattan hotel which included “delay” and “deny”, possibly referring to insurers seeking to avoid paying claims.
A security expert who once provided bodyguards for Thompson said he was shocked the executive wasn’t accompanied by security outside the hotel, while the NYT reported that dozens of security officers from Fortune 500 companies joined a call after the shooting to discuss additional protection from executives in the area.
Thompson had recently received several threats, according to reports.
