For the second week running drones were spotted flying near three bases used by the US Air Force (USAF) in East Anglia, prompting the UK to deploy almost 60 troops to provide protection and investigate.
The USAF reported that the drones were not hostile, but intelligence officials warned that Russia is engaged in various sabotage missions across Europe, including tampering with water supplies in Sweden and Finland and arson in the UK and the Czech Republic.
The incidents come shortly after the decision by the US and UK to allow Ukraine to fire long-range missiles into Russia. The drones were spotted overnight near RAF Mildenhall, RAF Feltwell and RAF Lakenheath, the latter being the only base to house USAF’s fourth-generation and fifth-generation jet fighters in Europe.
The incident is being probed by police as it is a civil offence to fly a drone above a military air base.
