No one could accuse owners of The Onion, the satirical news site and magazine, of ducking big decisions.
In August it made the bold choice to return to distributing a print edition after more than a decade.
This week it bought Infowars, the alt-right conspiracist website previously owned by Alex Jones, out of bankruptcy.
The plan, per the NYT, is to make the site a parody of itself, mocking “weird internet personalities” who peddle outlandish theories and quack cures.
The bid went ahead with the blessing of the families of victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, who won a $1.4 billion defamation lawsuit against Jones and his company in 2022.
Infowars was put up for auction to compensate Jones’s creditors, including victims.
It’s not clear what The Onion paid for the website and its assets, including a production studio and diet supplement business.
