A 17-year Internet search comes to a satisfying end

At long last, the Internet’s most mysterious song has been identified. Back in 1984, a teenager called Darius recorded a song onto a cassette from a radio station in West Germany. In 2007, his sister uploaded a digital version of the recording to web forums in an attempt to identify it. Twelve years later, the search was expanded by Reddit with the creation of a 60,000-strong subreddit called r/TheMysteriousSong. But the mystery remained unsolved – until now. A few weeks ago a Reddit user stumbled on an old newspaper article about a band called FEX, which won a local talent contest in 1984. The user contacted members of the band, who hadn’t been aware the search was taking place and confirmed the missing hit was their song ‘Subways of Your Mind’. On Thursday, the sexagenarians performed it on the station from which it had been taped 40 years ago. They plan to release a new version.
