More than $1 billion of UK taxpayers’ money was reportedly pledged to support a controversial gas project in northern Mozambique, built in an active conflict zone, in a move pushed through by former prime minister Liz Truss. Politico reports that Truss, as trade secretary, made the pledge in 2020 despite widespread opposition in Boris Johnson’s cabinet. Ten months later, Islamist militants attacked the site of the $20 billion gas project run by the French multinational, TotalEnergies. Around 1,000 civilians were killed, including contractors. Construction of the site has been paused since. In May, French prosecutors opened an investigation into Total, accusing the energy firm of negligence and indirect manslaughter.
