In theory this is a history of fashion in the 90s as told through the eyes of various Vogue editors. In practice, it’s Anna Wintour’s show from the moment she sits down and the director asks her to remove her sunglasses. “I’m going to keep them on,” she frosts. And so the celebrities – from Gwyneth Paltrow through Sarah Jessica Parker to (of course) Kim Kardashian – become a Greek chorus to her Deus ex Magazine. We see her dispense with grunge and Cool Britannia, champion John Galliano and Louboutin, empower the supermodels and nod kindly towards the Face and i-D. It’s an essay in power disguised as nostalgia but, with Wintour clearly deeply involved, it’s also another layer of mystery wrapped around her enigma. She did it all, and we’re still not entirely sure how.
