Anyone following social media posts about the arrest of Pavel Durov, the Telegram founder, is likely to have seen images of a white dog with a black nose, its eyes covered by a (usually black) hood. Resistance Dog was born in 2011, when instead of complying with a Russian government demand to remove opposition pages from his social media site VK, Durov responded with a photograph of his dog in a hoodie. Since then, variations on the theme have swirled around the web as a symbol of resistance to governments and curbs on free speech. At least three cryptocurrencies have been launched based on “Spotty” the dog. His and Durov’s status as icons of freedom of any kind have been undermined since Durov’s arrest in France last month by the Kremlin’s support for him and reports that since his self-imposed “exile” from Russia he has travelled back there more than 40 times.
