Imane Khelif, the gold medal-winning boxer, has filed a cyber-bullying lawsuit after her sex was called into question by multiple prominent figures.
The suit was filed against X under French law, which allows it to be filed against unnamed defendants, but according to Khelif’s lawyer JK Rowling and Elon Musk have already been named and Donald Trump may yet be implicated.
France’s Office for the Fight against Crimes against Humanity has opened an investigation, and is ultimately responsible for deciding who if anyone may have been at fault.
Anyone convicted could face up to five years’ imprisonment and fines worth £214,000. Rowling, who is usually very active on X, hasn’t posted since 7 August.
This article has been amended since publication to reflect the fact that Khelif’s sex, not gender, was called into question.
