Spare a thought for Bill Nelson, Nasa's administrator, who must soon decide whether two of his astronauts, already stranded on the International Space Station, will fly home soon in the Boeing Starliner spacecraft that took them there or wait six more months to be rescued by SpaceX. One big question hung over a Nasa press conference yesterday: what exactly is wrong with the Starliner? Nasa isn't sure. The capsule's five reaction control thrusters didn't thrust hard enough during the ISS docking process two months ago, but mission control doesn't know why. Boeing says it's ready to bring the Starliner back with or without Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore but Nasa still struggles with the trauma of losing two entire Shuttle crews in 1986 and 2003.
