Jimmy Carter hoax: X-user “tests users’ gullibility”

Jimmy Carter’s team had to deny reports the former US president was dead after a hoax letter was shared widely on social media. The letter has a letterhead reading “Office of Jimmy Carter” and is dated 23 July, but the text includes significant hints that something is amiss. In a fake quote, Carter refers to his late wife as “the original Brat”, a reference to a meme which only took off after Kamala Harris announced her presidential campaign. The letter also lists “selling the US out to Panama” and “getting soft on the Soviet Union” as some of Carter’s most significant achievements. The creator of the letter claimed it was an experiment “to see how gullible people are to sensationalist headlines”. Among those who fell for the hoax are the Republican Senator Mike Lee and Laura Loomer, a far-right conspiracy theorist. Jimmy Carter, 99, is still alive. His birthday is 1 October.
