The 37 year-old shadow chief secretary to the Treasury and MP for Bristol North West is regarded as one of Labour’s rising stars. In 2021 he was elected to succeed Rachel Reeves as head of the Business Select Committee, a role in which he used his skills as a trained lawyer to cross-examine badly behaved business leaders. He’s now likely to follow Reeves into Number 11 as her number two. During the campaign he’s impressed followers on social media as “refreshingly candid” for a politician. He may be more tight-lipped from now on: last week a leaked recording emerged in which he said Labour’s net zero plans could cost “hundreds of billions”. Labour later clarified he was referring to long-term private, not public, investment.
