One of a number of local councillors hoping to make the step up to MP, Praful Nargund is Labour’s candidate for the theoretically safe seat of Islington North. Theoretical because Nargund is fighting against the independent incumbent, the locally popular former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Having represented the seat since 1983, and with the backing of an army of supporters, Corbyn will be hard to dislodge. Nargund has faced accusations that senior party figures fast-tracked his candidacy. Critics also claim he’s dodged hustings and has in the past supported privatising healthcare. Despite this, a poll published this week, commissioned by Stats for Lefties and Novara Media, found that Nargund was on course to win, potentially making him the person who finally ends the Corbynite dream.
