Richard Holden, the Tory chairman, provoked anger earlier this month when he was selected at the last minute for a safe seat 300 miles from his former constituency. Holden’s decision to stand in Basildon and Billericay in Essex was described by one local Tory association member as a “slap in the face”. Now the MP, who previously claimed he was “bloody loyal” to the northeast, has distributed a leaflet describing himself as a “powerful voice for Basildon and Billericay”. Will voters in the constituency be persuaded? Unfortunately, that might be hard to tell. Thousands of the leaflets were accidentally distributed to addresses in next-door Rayleigh and Wickford, apparently as a result of “data” errors by CCHQ. As party chairman, Holden oversees national party administration… and campaigning.
