I hope this election is defined by the crisis in living standards. We see the enormity of the issues many are facing day in, day out at Citizens Advice: how to pay the rent, cover the bills, put food on the table. One of our key strengths is seeing people’s problems in the round. Many issues faced by those we help are rooted in the inability or unwillingness of public services to do the same. This is especially true in the debate around disability benefits, where a narrow focus on financial incentives means people struggle to get the support they need. My hope is the election will herald a change of approach – to one where the government recognises the key role charities have in supporting people through times like this, values our insights, factors our frontline expertise into their decision making. And, above all, sees people as people.
