A video of Joe Biden trying to sit on a non-existent chair. Another “showing” the 81 year-old freezing at a fundraiser before being led away by Barack Obama. A third suggesting Biden wandered off at the G7 summit. These recent videos have no AI-manipulation, just deceptive camera angles and artful editing. According to the White House, they are “cheap fakes” rather than “deep fakes”. Footage of the fundraising dinner from another angle, for instance, shows Biden taking in the applause. Such cheap-fake manipulation is being driven as much by right-wing media outlets as by social media. The Sinclair Broadcast Group, which operates a vast network of local TV news stations and news websites, has recently published articles suggesting Biden froze, slurred his words or even soiled himself. These articles are automatically syndicated to dozens of local news outlets which many Americans trust as a source of information. Note to news editors and consumers everywhere: you are not immune.
