Until Sunday, the former actor, dancer and MEP Michael Cashman sat on the Labour benches in the House of Lords. No longer. News trickled through yesterday that he had been stripped of the Labour whip. This followed his posting of a three-word tweet mocking the Labour candidate Rosie Duffield’s withdrawal from a hustings in Kent due to concerns for her personal safety as a result of her views on sex and gender. “Frit. Or lazy,” the LGBTQ campaigner tweeted, on the anniversary weekend of the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox. Cashman, a founder of the charity Stonewall, apologised for the post on Sunday. Labour leader Keir Starmer confirmed the suspension on Monday and said Cashman’s comments were “particularly inappropriate”.
