UK election 2024: Five minute silence – could it be true?

Every day between now and the election, Tortoise's Alexi Mostrous will examine a claim from the campaign trail. Some will be outlandish, some believable. Some might even be true.

Reform UK has received creative praise for a party political ad broadcast last week on Channel 4. The five-minute ad, which has been heavily reposted on social media, featured no sound or images at all apart from a single slogan: “Britain is Broken. Britain Needs Reform.” Nigel Farage posted it on X with the note: “Your TV isn’t broken, but Britain is.” Mark Lucas, former director of presentation for Tony Blair, called it a “work of genius” on Times Radio and “the best £15 spent in this election campaign”.  But who came up with it? No external agency stepped forward to take credit. I had thought that liberal creatives might be too scared of associating themselves with Farage et al. But, according to a party spokesman, the idea originated “internally”. Whatever you think about its politics, someone in Reform has a future career as an ad-man.
