I hope that the new government will take the creative industries in the country seriously again. I would like to see a version of national service that sends 18 year-olds to work on film sets, in galleries, theatres, ballet companies, costume hire, as set builders, in video game companies and fashion studios. The creative industries are used to training young people, and they understand the power of new ideas. Give all our young people the chance to experience the kind of access that changes lives. If you want to see productivity in action, watch a film or TV crew bring in a production on budget. South Korea made a huge investment in its culture industries and look how that paid off. Let’s acknowledge that the creative arts are as important as STEM. Everyone should have the chance to use their imagination.
