Elected as MP for Montgomeryshire in 2019 (he represented another Welsh seat in the short 2015-17 parliament), Craig Williams’ biggest claim to fame until now was as Rishi Sunak’s Parliamentary Private Secretary – effectively the conduit between Tory backbenchers and the PM. This week, Williams admitted having “a flutter” on the date the election would be held, only three days before it was called. The Guardian reported that he placed a £100 bet on a July election and is now facing an investigation by the Gambling Commission (a spokesperson noted that the confidential use of information in order to gain an unfair advantage when betting could be a criminal offence). Exactly what Williams knew and when is now under the spotlight, and will follow Sunak on the campaign trail.
