Labour has been on a journey from life under Jeremy Corbyn to life under Keir Starmer. Nowhere is that more apparent than in David Lammy’s team. Earlier this year the shadow foreign secretary hired the journalist and think tanker Ben Judah as one of his political advisers. Judah has previously worked for the Atlantic Council in Washington and written a lengthy report setting out a post-Brexit vision of British diplomacy that credits multiple Conservative figures and includes a foreword by an adviser to Thatcher. But Judah’s interests are broad and include a strong expertise in Europe, particularly France. Not only does he understand how the EU and the Elysee work, he’s said to enjoy a good relationship with senior figures there – which may explain how Lammy “used his contacts” to wangle himself and Starmer an invite to last week’s D-Day celebrations in France.
