The Greens’ co-leader wants to become the party’s second MP by heaving Labour’s Thangam Debbonaire out of Bristol Central. Carla Denyer landed the best laugh of Friday’s debate by mocking Angela Rayner and Penny Mordaunt for lacking dignity. She then lost some of hers in an interview with the News Agents’ Lewis Goodall in which she likened the functioning of the UK’s independent nuclear deterrent to knife crime: if you have a knife it could be used against you. And so it is, she said, with nuclear subs. To which Goodall responded: “We’re not going to nuke ourselves, are we?” No, Denyer mumbled, but it was too late. Shades of Corbyn, CND and unilateralism darkened the chat. For now, Debbonaire’s 28,000 majority looks unassailable.
